I use stoneware clay to make these straight sided mugs. This makes them super durable and dishwasher safe.
I use around 13 oz of clay and throw the cup on the pottery wheel. After a day or two it is then dry enough to trim the bottom and attach the handle. It then takes nearly 2 weeks to dry the cup out completely so that is ready for the first firing. If it’s not completely dry there is an explosion in the kiln!
Then I dip the cup in glaze avoiding covering the base by painting it with wax resist, if I didn’t it would stick solidly to the kiln shelf. The Kiln goes over 1200 degrees C in this last firing.
The cups may vary slightly in size,I hope you agree that this is the beauty of handmade.
